The Universality Of Stress

Every country in the world has one common factor – human beings! And wherever there are human beings, there will be happiness, sadness, conflicts, dramas, and, of course, stress. Yeah, stress is universal – even aliens would get stressed out if they landed on our chaotic planet! That said, stress can be said to be universal in two ways – one, it is experienced around the globe; and, two, it is experienced irrespective of gender and among all age groups, though maybe to different extents.

Almost everyone experiences stressful conditions daily, unfailingly. Stress can come from anywhere – relationships, health conditions, relations, workplace, traffic jams, out-of-the-blue, you-name-it. Okay, there's one rider here – we're talking about the urban world. Rural parts of the world are relatively stress-free because life out there is simple and healthy. Stress is upon us mostly because of our fast-paced urban lifestyles.

So, if you want, take a wee bit of respite in the fact that stress is universal, and that you are not the lone sufferer in this world. Even people around you who outwardly look happy-go-lucky and stress-free may actually be suffering from stressful conditions. The difference lies in how well you as an individual cope with stress. It is the individual response to stress that varies from person to person, even though the physiological response of our body is the same for everyone.

Coping with stressful conditions and coming out of this difficult state is a challenging task for our body. But nature has installed in the body an in-built self-defense mechanism to deal with stress. So, when we face a problem, our body counter-punches the stress by releasing two stress-related hormones – cortisone and adrenaline. These hormones pump up the circulatory system and raise the heartbeat and blood pressure, so that we can react to the situation at hand with renewed fervor and get rid of stress, rather than procrastinate the problem and fret and fume.

If the stressful situation is warded off in a planned manner, these hormones get used up. However, if the reaction to the stress situation is not up to the mark, these hormones remain in the bloodstream and create tension in the muscles, anxiety, headaches, migraines, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), eating disorders, allergies, insomnia, hypertension, and more such evil stuff. Ever thought why we are planet-packed with so many potentially sick people?

Thus, even though stress is universal, it has to be combated at an individual level. Frankly speaking, lifestyles in the urban areas of developing and developed economies have entered a high-stress zone. Still, everything is not lost. If we have to get out of the stress zone that we have created, the best way would be to change our lifestyles. We must go back to basics and begin leading a life that is moderately minimalist – this is not to say we must not enjoy luxuries, rather, we must possess them in moderation. We must include an exercise regimen, eat healthy, natural foods, learn to relax and meditate, and kill our negative thoughts. Only then we will be able to eliminate our stressful surroundings and help make the world a better place.
