How To Conquer Stress

Stress is our body's response to a situation that it acknowledges as emotionally upsetting and worrisome. Today stress is all around us and has become a part and parcel of modern life - our colleagues want to go one up on us, our family expects more from us, our friends are always busy to listen to us, and our economy expects us to perform without giving us the right opportunities. No wonder people get stressed out on a daily basis.

Stress is bad - it increases our blood pressure, revs up our heartbeat, makes us think negatively, releases harmful chemicals into the body, and does other such evil things that can lead to a host of medical conditions. The solution is to conquer stress and here is how we can do that:

1. The first step is to figure out the factor that is causing stress. Stress can be caused by your interaction with someone, or your aversion, apprehension and fear for a particular place/thing/event/situation, or a combination of these factors. It is, therefore, important in the first place to identify what is causing you stress and get a grip on the situation. This way you will learn to control your mind.

2. The second step is to stay away from disturbing events/people/things. If you can do that and then stop thinking about them, your stress will vanish. But this is easier said than done, because some stressful situations are an essential part of everyday life and cannot always be avoided.

3. So, what do you do when stress becomes a part of your routine? Well, firstly, you have to accept the fact that stress will come daily, and that you have to conquer it. Once you begin anticipating stress, 50% of its severity will go down the drain.

4. The next step is to learn to relax. Everybody is different, so there are different strokes for different folks - some people feel relaxed by meditating and deep breathing, some defuse situations by talking about them with their friends, some feel recharged simply by taking a break, some de-stress by exercising (which you must anyway make a part of your life), some find peace in their favorite music, and so on. Find out what works best for you and use it. We suggest you schedule a mix of all major stress-busting techniques.

5. Being realistic in your expectations can also reduce the intensity of stress.

6. Sport a positive attitude.

7. Be sociable. People are what they are and they behave depending on their circumstances. An arrogant man may be a fine human being, but is acting arrogant because he's getting hell at home and he considers arrogance and defiance to be his defense mechanism. Once you recognize that people are what they are because of their circumstances - it will make you a tolerant person and you will be able to handle stress calmly.

8. Be firm and communicate clearly - more than half of the stressful conditions in life are caused by poor communication.

9. No bad habits please - i.e., quit smoking and drink very moderately, if you have to.

Stress can eat into your life. But you can reclaim your life by conquering stress. Follow the tips above and find out how they kill stress. Good luck.
