Children And Stress

It seems like it was just yesterday when children were a happy lot of people, laughing and playing, without a care in the world. Now, they lead a stressed-out life right from the outset. Working parents, uncaring and fighting parents, a lonely childhood, a high rate of divorce, peer pressure, academic demands, exposure to the wrong kind of websites, and junk food have all combined to create tensions in children's lives. When children get stressed out, their underdeveloped stress-fighting mechanism freaks out and causes havoc in their body and mind.

The consequences are dangerous – children who are full of tension develop not only emotional problems and aggressive tendencies, even their health suffers. Their zest for life is nixed and their interest in academics goes down the drain. The result is they grow up to be either incomplete adults or over-matured kids.

Busting children's stress – tips for parents

1. Parents must always act as friends to their children. When parents are friendly, children open up and speak about their problems.

2. Parents must always surround their children with an honest, calm and truthful environment that is full of fun. When parents are calm, truthful and emotionally strong, the children grow up to be like them.

3. If children feel pressurized due to academics or by situations created by their peers, then it is the duty of every parent to go to their rescue and counsel them.

4. Always praise children when they do something well, and don't forget to shower love and affection on them – remember the times how you loved them before they could walk and talk?

5. Do not pressurize your children to excel in academics. If they're doing reasonably well, then it is fine. If they are not doing well, then get them some extra help with their studies.

6. It is the responsibility of every parent to spot a stressed child and then be sensitive to him and help him out.

7. Parents must make it a point to spend quality time with their children. This is not just a bonding activity – it is an absolutely essential part of their childhood if you want them to grow into healthy and emotionally strong adults.

8. Create a sense of humor in them – people with a good sense of humor can tackle life's problems quite easily.

9. Don't load too many responsibilities on your children.

10. Put them on an exercise regimen.

11. Finally, if your child is stressed out despite your best efforts, then take him/her to a medical professional immediately.

Given today's fast-paced world, children are bound to get stressed. The only way out is to understand them and help them out.
