Countering Stress In The Workplace

Workplace stress is one of the largest stress contributors or categories when people list what is behind their stress. You have difficult co workers, customers, clients, deadlines and supervisors. You have quotas and a host of other issue which add to the daily stress of everyday life. There are a few things that you can do however to combat workplace stress.

The first thing to do is accept that it is what it is. In other words, this is the way the situation is and wishing it were different is not going to do anything but create additional stress. By accepting the situation for exactly what it is you can easily reduce the amount of stress caused by expectations. The next step is to look at the problem and situation directly and from as many angles as possible. This allows you to obtain a perspective. Once you have perspective of the situation you can then put together a way to resolve the issue or accomplish the goal without unnecessary actions.

It may take a little practice in order to be able to do this but it is well worth the time it takes to learn. Being able to accept a situation or problem for what it is and then look at it from all angles before creating a plan to resolve it is one of the best ways to reduce stress in the workplace. The next step is to take larger projects which are usually the cause of a significant amount of stress and break them down into smaller pieces. Projects and problems are like houses they have foundations, floors, rooms, and a roof. When creating something or putting something together you start with the foundation, after all you cannot build the floor on top of the roof. Set a deadline for each of the aspects of the project that you have to do. This will increase your chances of one completing the project on time and two finding any problems before they have an effect on the project itself. This scenario can be applied to every type of job in any type of field.

Dealing with people either co workers or customers can be the second and depending on the job sometimes the first largest contributor to stress. First reduce the stress by keeping a positive outlook and remember to treat the customer, no matter how they act, as you would like to be treated if the position was reversed. Do what you can to ease their stress and tension as it will help to ease your own.

Take breaks and lunches that are assigned. There is a reason why these pauses in the work day are legally required. Even if you only have a short ten minute break take some time to walk around outside if you work in an office or indoor environment or find a comfortable place to rest in the shade if possible if you have an outdoor position. Working through breaks and lunches only adds additional stress to the body. Our bodies were designed to work better with rest between activities. Finally, if you are dealing with a difficult project put it aside for a few minutes and work or do something else. It will help you to de-stress and gain new insight.
