#remember, If You Cant Change It, Dont Sweat ItThere is a common mantra that many turn to in times of stress and recovery from stress. The Serenity Prayer, as it is known, states "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference." This is an excellent prayer or mantra to say to yourself when you are feeling overwhelmed by the stressors in your life. The best way to understand what this prayer is trying to say is to pick it apart and identify each part individually. The Serenity Prayer does not have to be religious at all. Instead, you can turn it into your personal mantra if you do not want to make it a religious thing. Grant me the Serenity to Accept the things that cannot be changed - We do have power over many of the facets of our lives, but clearly not all of them are in our control. Grant me the courage to change the things I can - When things can be changed in your life, possessing the courage to make those changes is a vital part of overcoming the stressors that you do have power over. Grant me the wisdom to know the difference - Here is where the most important considerations lay. You need to look at all of the stressful aspects of your life, and you need to really figure out which ones are capable of being changed and which are not. What aspects of your life do you have control over? Which aspects of your live are out of your control? You cannot change your family, or eliminate a terminal illness, but you can change your job if it is overwhelming you, or you can go back to school to make more money if your financial situation is a major stressful. Developing the wisdom to know the difference between the things you can change and those that you cannot is a vital part of leaning how to overcome your stress. When you know what you can change, you can work on altering those aspects of your life. When you come to understand what you cannot change in your life, it will teach you to better let those particular stressors move on. Why stress out about something you have absolutely no control over? Rather than getting yourself caught up in a bunch of unnecessary stress because something completely out of your control is affecting you, simply let it go. If you can't change it, don't sweat it. Focus your attention on those aspects of your life that you can change, and work on righting them instead. Just tell yourself: I have the serenity to accept the things that I cannot change. I have the courage to change the things that I can. And I have the wisdom necessary to discern the difference.
